Fashion Designing

Save
For a long time, women's fashion design has been an integral part of culture, greatly impacting status and lifestyle. The fashion shows of today determine what will be chic and in vogue tomorrow. Designs from many countries are being incorporated into the latest fashions. A career in fashion design can be an exciting and global adventure.

Definition

  • Fashion designing is an art like painting or music. You use your creativity to design clothing and related accessories to make a personal statement. Fashion design includes haute couture and pret-a-porter, or ready-to-wear. Haute couture designers create custom-made apparel for an exclusive line of customers. The designs are highlighted through fashion shows. Every year, the haute couture designers come up with the newest ways to blend color, fabric, patterns and texture. Ready-to-wear is clothing created for the general public. Most recently, many well-known designers have been creating fashion statements in pret-a-porter and even have the fashion shows to announce their new lines and set trends.

Change

  • Fashion attire depends on the season, with the fabrics, styles, colors and textures suitable for the temperature. The winter collection includes woolen fashions in blues, blacks and browns. Summer designs are more frivolous and light with colorful cotton. In the past, fashion designs remained popular for several months or a year. Now, within several weeks one trend replaces another. As a fashion designer, it is necessary to always remain ahead of the game.

Courses

  • In fashion-design school, students learn the ins and outs of creating and making attire and accessories. Courses include anatomy drawing, fashion sketching, computer graphics, pattern development and fabric and color choice. There is an emphasis on the proportional drawing and sketching, since this is where the ideas come out onto the page and are realized before becoming a true fashion. You will spend many hours in class developing your portfolio.

Career

  • Fashion design sounds very glamorous, but it is a high-stress, high-energy and very competitive field. It requires long hours and the ability to keep going after receiving constructive criticism. You also need an eye for the newest way to promote color, fabric texture and flow, and style. Most fashion designers have at least a two-year degree. Many pursue a bachelor's degree in fashion, marketing, merchandising or business. With another skill, they can go into other fashion areas if necessary, such as graphic design or interior design. Only the best find work as assistants with designers, so it is important to look at related careers. Any university you choose should be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, with experienced fashion professionals as professors, the latest technology, opportunities to display your work and compete with other students, trips to design centers and assistance in finding work.

Fashion Day

  • A fashion designer does not spend the whole day creating new clothing. There is a great deal of research required to follow the latest print and online fashion publications, newspapers and television. You also must go to other fashion shows and talk with other designers about their latest work. Having a very outgoing and vibrant personality helps you make your mark in the fashion world.
